BEACH RETREAT, SEPT 16-18 We have space reserved at Camp Magruder, where we can fish, canoe or kayak, swim, read, play games, sing, pick huckleberries, fix great meals, worship, take communion, and have a lot of fun together. In the midst of it all, we will get to know each other better. For instance, last year, we learned who can make a GREAT huckleberry pie [Stephanie], who dares to swing way out over a blackberry thicket [Michael], who rises early [Scott], who loves to play games [Lisa], who should NOT plan to drive a distance early in the morning [Jeanne]. We talked about our faith and our church, dreamed about how we’d like to grow, rested, boated, read, and walked on the beach.
This year, we have two housing options. Our meeting area and two dorm rooms are in Beutler Hall. We also have Walworth Apartment, with two bedrooms, a double fold-out bed in the living room, kitchen and bathroom for those who would like to reserve a room for two. Prices for the entire week-end, meals, housing and fun, are $100/person. We will have scholarship help for those who need it.
Plan to attend; you’ll be glad you did.
TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME The Community of Welcoming Congregations is taking reservations for GLBT night with the Portland Beavers. The outfield reserved seats cost $7.50. To join the group on Friday evening, August 19 contact
PENCIL IT IN UPUMC donated over 1800 pencils to help North Portland low income children begin school fully equipped. The pencils and other school supplies were distributed to children at the North Portland Readiness Fair.
A SUCCESSFUL READINESS FAIR Children and parents were lined up around the block right before the North Portland Readiness Fair opened on Saturday, August 13. The Readiness Fair, sponsored by the Caring Community of North Portland, provides low income families with a packet of school supplies for each child, immunizations, and information about services and community organizations. University Park United Methodist Church was the only community of faith present at the fair. We had the pleasure of serving 120 slices of pizza, 83 bottles of water, and 50 cans of soda to participants and volunteers. We also handed out brochures about UPUMC and hosted games organized by the Peninsula Community Development Corporation’s Youth Council. In the process, we reinforced our reputation as a church that is involved in the community, provided an inexpensive source of food and drink to participants and volunteers, and made a small profit of $133.14, 30% of which we will donate to the Caring Community of North Portland to help sponsor the Readiness Fair. Many, many thanks to the volunteers who made this possible: Bev Heginbotham, Trena Klohe, Scott Jensen, Bill Thomasson, Dick Burdon, Bev Read, Bev Marshall, Melissa Fern, Judy Griffen, Joey Solis, Carol Morales, Jeanne Knepper and Marcia Hauer.
University Park United Methodist Church (UPUMC) is located at 4775 N Lombard, Portland Oregon 97203. UPUMC is small, diverse, growing, laughing, committed, caring, serious, warm and REAL! We are a community that encourages each other as we grow in faith, in knowledge, in service, and in love of self, God and neighbor. At University Park we not only respect but welcome diversity in race, gender, national origin, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, physical and mental ability, economic status and profession. We believe all people are equal before God and entitled to Gods grace and abundance. Pastors: Rev. Dr. Jeanne Knepper & Rev. Marcia Hauer http://www.upumc.net
