PUTTING OUR HEADS TOGETHER FOR UPUMC
Writing notes for UPUMC. Today after church, we will have note cards, pens, sample notes and good fellowship while we write notes to people we know who might like to know about the UPUMC web site or make a donation to the good things we do at UPUMC. It will be fun.
Donut sales with coffee, pop, and music, second and fourth Thursdays, 7:30am-noon. With more volunteers, we can begin to take pre-orders and to deliver donuts, as well as selling more on site. The next sale will be on August 11. Let Carolyn Hammett know if you can help. 503-653-7870.
Bring your rinsed, empty cans and bottles to the box in Errol Stephenson Hall. Volunteers will return them for the deposits and donate the money to the church.
Vacationing for UPUMC. Joel Sundstrom and John McDonald-O’Lear are offering to rent their Mt. Hood cabin, located in Rhododendron, to raise funds for UPUMC. The fully furnished cabin is near a creek and has beds for six people. It rents for $250 per night. For more information, contact Joel at 503-220-8242 or
Fund-raising at the North Portland Readiness Fair. UPUMC will have food and games at the North Portland Readiness Fair, 11am-2pm August 13 at Roosevelt High School. We will be selling Nicola’s pizza slices, sodas and water. Volunteers should be available from 10am [set-up] until clean-up after the Fair closes at 2pm. Remember that it is warm and bright out—bring a hat and water. There will be chairs for volunteers, who will serve food and beverages, take money, issue game tickets, and fetch hot pizzas throughout the day. Each year 1000-1500 children and parents attend the Readiness Fair, where children and youth who will be attending North Portland schools receive packets of school supplies, immunizations and information about community organizations and events. We have promised to share the profits of our fund-raising with the Caring Community of North Portland, which provides the school supplies and runs the Readiness Fair. Thanks to Nicola’s Pizza for providing reduced-price pizzas, cooler space, ice and advice for the event.
BEACH RETREAT, SEPT 16-18 We have space reserved at Camp Magruder, where we can fish, canoe or kayak, swim, read, play games, sing, pick huckleberries, fix great meals, worship, take communion, and have a lot of fun together. In the midst of it all, we will get to know each other better. For instance, last year, we learned who can make a GREAT huckleberry pie [Stephanie], who dares to swing way out over a blackberry thicket [Michael], who rises early [Scott], who loves to play games [Lisa], who should NOT plan to drive a distance early in the morning [Jeanne]. We talked about our faith and our church, dreamed about how we’d like to grow, rested, boated, read, and walked on the beach.
This year, we have two housing options. Our meeting area and two dorm rooms are in Beutler Hall. We also have Walworth Apartment, with two bedrooms, a double fold-out bed in the living room, kitchen and bathroom for those who would like to reserve a room for two.
Prices for the entire week-end, meals, housing and fun, are $100/person. We will have scholarship help for those who need it.
Plan to attend; you’ll be glad you did.
ABOUT THE PIANO A member of the congregation has graciously allowed UPUMC to use his Steinway piano for several years, providing all of us with pleasure as we listen to Stephanie play it. Someone is now interested in buying that piano from him. He has offered UPUMC a chance to buy it if we would like to, but needs a decision quickly. The cost would be about $8000.
This opportunity comes in the midst of a time when we have other pressing financial concerns, a projected budgetary shortfall and a roof that leaks.
One member of the community has offered to put up $2000 toward the purchase of the piano if there are others who would pledge, beyond their normal or expected giving, to give the rest during the next 12 months. I know that this is a tremendous reach, but wanted to put the possibility of buying the piano before us if there is interest. Talk to me if you wish to pledge to this end.--Jeanne
