PENCILS FOR KIDS Do you remember the excitement of getting your new school supplies each fall to start the new school year? Do you know that buying school supplies is a challenge for many of the families of school children in North Portland? There are 4,384 children enrolled in North Portland Public Schools in the Roosevelt cluster, the area UPUMC is in. We are a big part of a neighborhood effort to make sure that every one of those students starts school with the school supplies they need. Our own Lisa Horne is coordinating the collection of school supplies. Our part of that grand adventure is to collect as many pencils as we can. Watch for the back to school sales and start to collect those pencils. Bring them to the altar as our gift to God and to the kids of our community. Let’s show ourselves, once again, that we are the church that can, and does. We will collect through July and the first part of August.
WALK AND WIN AN IPOD The Portsmouth Neighborhood Association will host a Neighborhood walk on Tuesday, July 24, 2007 at 7pm. Residents will walk through the neighborhood to discuss our community assets and what we’d like to see improved. Walkers will be joined by City Commissioner Sam Adams, Metro Councilor Rex Burkholder, County Commissioner Jeff Cogen, State Representative Tina Kotek and Crime Prevention Coordinator Havilah Ferschwilder. Afterwards, there will be a drawing for an IPOD Nano for a Portsmouth resident. For more information, talk to Scott Jensen.
ALL CHURCH BEACH RETREAT AUG 3-5 Camp Magruder had some time available to groups, and several people asked if it would be possible for us to plan an all-church retreat on short notice. I spoke with the office manager at the camp and have reserved the weekend of Friday, August 3 to Sunday, August 5. Beutler Hall has two big sleeping rooms with bunkbeds, a large central room, a kitchen, two bathrooms and a shower. All of the rooms are on one level. The cost for the retreat is $100 per person, which includes all food and lodging. There will be scholarship help available, so do not let the cost deter you. We do all of our own cooking and we provide our own bedding, towels and toiletries. This is a time away to rest, relax, play and get to know one another better. There is a sign-up sheet on the Narthex bulletin board. Please sign up now. There is some scholarship assistance available. Let me know if you could use some help.—Marcia
UPUMC ENDOWMENT INVESTMENTS The finance committee met on July 11, 2007. Guests present were: Bruce Rogers and Al Rieke, Metropolitan District Church Extension Society and Greg Dufault, Equity Fund Manager. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss our current investments, and to decide what the best investment strategy is for the church.
Metropolitan District Church Extension Society (MDCES) Bruce Rogers described our options as maximizing income, growth, or a combination of both. The risk from low to high is church loan portfolio, short-term fixed, long-term fixed, and equity growth. The average return of the equity growth fund for the following time periods was: 1995-2006 – 3.795%. 2005 – 10.485% 2006 – 11.92%
Greg stated that our current investment in long-term fixed income (bonds) is not doing as well as in years past, and he is glad that we are rethinking our investments. He proposed a 60% investment in equity growth funds, 30% in short-term fixed income, and 10% in a set aside fund for our needs over the next two years.
UPUMC Investment Decisions UPUMC currently has $81,715.34 to invest, which is made up of $59,441.82 (current value of long-term fund) and $22,273.52 (proceeds from O’Hearn land sale). We will hold back $4,273.52 from the O’Hearn proceeds to cover the legal costs in recovering that money. Any left over money after paying the legal fees will be sent to MDCES for the short-term fixed income portfolio.
The committee decided to have our investment funds (endowment) split into the following funds: 10% – church loan portfolio investment fund = $8,000 30% – short-term fixed income portfolio = $21,441.82 60% – equity fund = $48,000
Our $8,000 investment in the church loan portfolio fund is a set aside account, which we plan on drawing from each year to pay taxes on the parsonage. The paperwork was completed and signed to make the above changes, and Karen wrote a check for $18,000 to MDCES. The Trustees will need to ratify these decisions.
Birthday Fundraiser Idea Jeanne suggested a new fundraiser to allow members to commemorate their birthdays by making a donation to the church. The Birthday Fund would involve a “bank” jar that is contributed to for honoring someone’s birthday. Example: Lisa turns 42 in October. Lisa would donate 42 “x” to the jar, where “x” is decided by the giver, such as pennies, dimes, quarters, dollars. Other church members would be welcome to donate too.
The next meeting is Tuesday, August 14, 2007 at 7:30 p.m. Respectfully submitted by Lisa Horne, Finance Committee Chair
