CHILDREN’S SUNDAY SCHOOL Jennifer Herbach is back to teaching the Children’s Sunday School program that runs during the worship service, but success has brought the need for assistance, of two types. Jennifer needs people who will be assistants and people who will be substitutes. Assistants will be in the children’s class on days of their choosing, helping the class to run smoothly while Jennifer is there. Substitutes will be there on days when Jennifer and her family have planned not to be in church. They could also be assisted by the assistants.
If you are among those who are really pleased that we can now offer a children’s program; if you are someone who remembers the love, care and guidance that you received years ago as a child in Sunday School; if you are called to help children learn that God loves them more than words can ever tell—if this note is calling to you, please let Jennifer know that you are willing to be a part of the program. We will all thank you for living out your call to love and guide the children.
PRIDE FESTIVAL MOVED TO AUG 13 Free food, beverages, musicians, political speakers, neighborhood leaders, vendor tables, information about living in North Portland—The North Portland Pride Festival is one of our biggest annual outreach events. We have rescheduled the event to Sunday, August 13, Noon-4pm. Plan now to attend, visit, help, enjoy, and welcome people to our wonderful community of faith. We will schedule our annual Reconciling Sunday on the same day.
LINNEA GOOD CONCERT Linnea Good, an extraordinary singer, pianist and song-writer, will perform in the Portland area at 7:30pm on Saturday, September 9, at Tigard UMC. The concert will benefit the Oregon-Idaho Camp and Retreat Ministries program. Volunteers at camps can get free tickets to the concert. The rest of us will want to save the day and plan to attend.
RESOURCES FOR YOUTH Did you know that the United Methodist Church has many resources for youth available on-line? You can find them at http://www.gbod.org/youngpeople/youth/youth.htm. There are devotional resources, news resources, and an on-line survey for youth. I found an article, “Dreaming God’s Dream†which is based on the book, God Has a Dream, by Archbishop Desmond Tutu. That book is available to check out in our own UPUMC library. The church, and its youth representative, Jay Clark, would like to hear from you. Check it out!
JOEL AND JOHN WILL BE MOVING John McDonald-O’Lear has accepted a position with the University of Arizona at Phoenix. He will start that position on August 1, and Joel will follow soon after, once he has transferred his pharmaceutical credentials. They leave with the hope that they will return often to the Portland area; they are keeping their condo here to make that possible. Joel and John hope to see us in the interval before they move.
We have been able blessed to be able to store and use their beautiful Steinway piano for several years, a wonderful gift to us. At this point, they hope to be able to have it in their new living space, so they will be doing some repair and preparation before moving it to Phoenix.
20 THINGS TO DO FOR CHILDREN Have you noticed the magnetic message on the side of the refrigerator? I thought it would be good to remind ourselves of these ways to treat children with respect.—Jeanne
• Meet eyes when you speak. • Say “please†with your requests. • Say “thank you.†• Let your “no†mean no. • Let your “yes†mean yes. • Listen. Listen. Listen. • Laugh out loud. • Welcome your child’s friends. • Give clear expectations. • Set realistic goals. • Set consequences clearly and consistently. • Create rules together. • Celebrate success. • Explain why you are angry • Say “I’m sorry.†• Use a soft voice. • Hug often. • Stop what you are doing and listen. • Keep your promises, • Say “I love you.â€
