CONGRATULATIONS MARIAH HERBACH! Mariah Herbach has finished the Fifth Grade. At the school awards ceremony on June 14, Mariah was one of only a few students in her school who received an award for Outstanding Academic Excellence from the President’s Education Awards Program. Her certificate is signed by President George W. Bush, United States Secretary of Education Margaret Spelling, and the principal of John Ball School. Let’s show Mariah that we are proud of her and appreciate her hard work!
CONGRATULATIONS ERICA MARTINEZ! Erica Martinez has received word that she has been awarded a HANA [Hispanic, Asian, Native American/Alaska Native and Pacific Islander] Scholarship of $3500 by the World Service Division of the United Methodist Church. She will use it to continue her studies at Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Oregon.
JAYDEN DANIELS IS NEW CUSTODIAN The Staff Parish Relations Committee chose Jayden Daniels to be the University Park UMC Custodian after Phil Herbach retires on June 24. Jay has experience as custodian in church, college, and camp programs and is eager to contribute to the well-being of the UPUMC congregation. She will be training with Phil on June 17 and 24 so that there will be a smooth transition. As before, if you have a request or information for the custodian, you can leave a note on the inside of the door to the janitor’s closet.
OUR FOOD PANTRY IS LOW The good news is that we once again supported the Good Samaritan Food Bank of North Portland with a generous gift of 269 pounds of high quality food for the hungry of North Portland. The urgent news is that our own pantry, our insurance that no one will leave our building hungry, is quite low in food. Can you include the pantry in your grocery shopping? We especially need rice, beans, pasta, canned vegetables and fruits, and soups, chilis, stews. Thanks so much for your generosity. It is a good thing to be able to ensure that no one leaves our building hungry—do know that real people truly appreciate your generosity.--Jeanne
CHILDREN’S SUNDAY SCHOOL Jennifer Herbach is back to teaching the Children’s Sunday School program that runs during the worship service, but success has brought the need for assistance, of two types. Jennifer needs people who will be assistants and people who will be substitutes. Assistants will be in the children’s class on days of their choosing, helping the class to run smoothly while Jennifer is there. Substitutes will be there on days when Jennifer and her family have planned not to be in church. They could also be assisted by the assistants.
If you are among those who are really pleased that we can now offer a children’s program; if you are someone who remembers the love, care and guidance that you received years ago as a child in Sunday School; if you are called to help children learn that God loves them more than words can ever tell—if this note is calling to you, please let Jennifer know that you are willing to be a part of the program. We will all thank you for living out your call to love and guide the children.
COFFEE AND FELLOWSHIP TIME Isn’t it a good time, those moments after worship when we gather together in the Narthex, sipping a beverage, nibbling on a snack, catching up with one another and meeting and greeting the new folk among us! The Outreach Committee considers this a primary time for evangelism, that is, making the “good news†of community of faith a real and lived thing. Part of that loving outreach is making sure that the beverages and snacks are prepared with care and served with love.
This time of greeting and eating does not happen of itself. Before we leave the sanctuary after worship, our hosts have been preparing for us, making coffee, setting out the snacks, heating the water for tea or hot chocolate. When we leave the sanctuary, they are there to serve us. Have you wondered whether you could host this time of outreach and fellowship? Of course you can! All you need do is sign up, in the “host†column of the sign-up sheet for worship leadership, arrive early to make the coffee [there are instructions in the kitchenette] and be there, practicing the ministry of service and hospitality. Please do.
PRIDE FESTIVAL MOVED TO AUG 13 Free food, beverages, musicians, political speakers, neighborhood leaders, vendor tables, information about living in North Portland—The North Portland Pride Festival is one of our biggest annual outreach events. We have rescheduled the event to Sunday, August 13, Noon-4pm. Plan now to attend, visit, help, enjoy, and welcome people to our wonderful community of faith. We will schedule our annual Reconciling Sunday on the same day.
