THINKING ABOUT JOINING UPUMC?
You’ve been attending for a while and now you are beginning to think of UPUMC as “your� church. You know that some of the people in worship are members, and that they take responsibility to make lots of things happen. Are you thinking about whether you’d like to join? But what would that mean?

On Sunday, May 7, we will begin a three-Sunday class for people who are interested in UPUMC and would like to learn more. Each class will begin at 11:30am and will run for one hour. Plates of nibblies and beverages will be on hand—we’re thinking of fruit, cheeses, crackers, maybe baked goods or pizza?—to tide you through the after church hungries.

Classes will cover United Methodist history, organization and beliefs and the history and special ministries of UPUMC. New-comers and long-time attenders are encouraged to attend, as there will also be time to get to know one another better. Although no one attending will be pressured to join UPUMC, those who wish may plan to join on June 4, the Sunday we celebrate as Pentecost, the first birthday of the Christian Church.

KIDS TO CAMP, AUGUST 16-19, 2006
The Education Committee and the Administrative Council of UPUMC are launching a new “Send Our Kids To Camp� program this summer. We want to send our Sunday School children who have finished First through Fifth grades [ages 7-11] to “Nature Detectives� Camp at Suttle Lake, August 16-19. We anticipate that 5 children can attend. Although the camp costs $175 per camper, we are asking families to pay only $50 per family, regardless of the number of children. We will seek camperships through the Conference Camp and Retreat Program, help from the UPUMC United Methodist Women, donations from members, and money from our Sunday School budget to cover the rest of the cost. We need to sign up before May 5. Please let Jeanne know if you are interested in sending your child or in being an adult helper at the camp [at no additional charge.]

ST JOHNS PARADE
University Park UMC members will carry our church banner in the Portsmouth neighborhood contingent of the St Johns parade. The parade starts at noon, Saturday, May 13. The Portsmouth entry will feature singing of three songs, Lift Every Voice and Sing, This Land Is Your Land, and We Shall Overcome. There will be a truck-float to carry singers from Portsmouth Middle School, who will be a part of the entry. Usually we're pretty close to the front of the floats so we finish early. We ask those who will parade to arrive between 10:30 and 11. (We will have free water, snacks, etc.) That gives time for costuming, placement, etc. We have always been stationed right in front of Roosevelt HS on Central Street. Look for a big truck that has "Portsmouth" signs. Those who wish to can meet at UPUMC at 10:15 to carpool to the beginning, leaving another vehicle near the end of the parade. the route is about 1 1/2 miles long, down Lombard to the St Johns Community Center. sign up if you will join us and if you need transportation.

SING OUT, SPEAK UP FOR JUSTICE
Christ the Reconciler, a new inclusive and progressive New Church Start in the Sunnyside area presents its Spring Event on Sunday, May 21, at 2:30 PM at the Sunnyside Grange Hall, SE 132nd and SE Sunnyside Drive in Clackamas. Doors will open at 2:00 PM.

The program is entitled "Sing Out, Speak Up for Justice". It features the Community Chautauqua Choir singing "Freedom", a tribute to Harriet Tubman, FOUR JUSTICE, a quartet from Ainsworth UCC singing songs of justice, and
Thom Hartmann of KPOJ Progressive Radio who will speak and respond to questions. A donation of $10.00 is suggested. Persons under 12 are free.

The purposes of the program is to attract persons to the new church start project who are looking for a progressive Christian faith community, to raise funds for the Woodlawn Resource Center (Woodlawn UMC) and to provide an afternoon of inspiration and entertainment to those who are supportive of Christ the Reconciler.
