CHRISTIAN FAMILY VALUES Romans 8:14-17; Matthew 12:46-50 Rev. Dr. Jeanne Knepper May 8, 2005
I think it is possible that Cliff was the sweetest man I will ever meet. I never heard him utter an unkind word about anyone. He was a man of patience, kindness and charity, never raising his voice, never criticizing. Needless to say, people liked to be around Cliff. When he and his partner Paul had a Christmas party, their whole home turned into a delightful Christmas confection, Cliff gave everyone who came to the party a picture of Jesus, the sort of prayer card he had received in his childhood as a Catholic boy in rural Kansas.
It was hard for all of us when Cliff was diagnosed with AIDS, long enough ago that there weren’t the life-extending, life-saving treatments now available. We grieved, but Cliff kept his even temper. As we’d visit, he’d tell us that he knew Jesus loved him, and he looked forward to being together. He had only one wish for the time before he died: he wanted to see his parents, to tell them he loved them and to receive their blessing as a beloved son. He was too ill to travel to Kansas. They would not come to Denver.
Church folk offered to cover the transportation, but that was not the problem. They would not see him unless he was willing to “give up†being gay. Until then they were adamant: he was dead, doomed, damned. Cliff hung on, hoping that prayer and letters would sway them. For nine months, he teetered at the door of a death he did not fear, hoping daily that they would change their minds. Finally, he came to terms with their adamancy and let go. His parents, able to claim him in death as they were not willing to claim him in life, took his body back to Kansas for burial, making it clear that Paul would not be welcome at his graveside.
